LKAB chooses strategic digitalization partners to deliver new vision

Press release, Skellefteå/Piteå, October 26, 2021: LKAB have chosen Data Ductus, and Spin Growth (parent company of Substorm and Tromb) as key digitalization partners moving forward. A three-year agreement has been signed with the option for an extension. LKAB will get access to the companies’ expertise in system development, architecture, development methodology and working processes. The agreement also covers artificial intelligence, intelligent automation, digitalization management, design and cloud services.

During the first half of 2021, LKAB procured the services of a team of strategic consultancy companies. Together, they will help the mining company safeguard its position as a leading international player in the industry. With the help of new, smart, tailored technology, the aim is to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability across mining operations.

Taking a giant step forward with digitalization

”We are very proud that LKAB has chosen us,” says Anders Hallberg, CEO of Spin Growth. “Practically, we will have to bring in at least ten new people to the company. The assignment revolves around transitioning LKAB into the future, and we are looking forward to collaborating with their talented team on this exciting journey and indeed with the skilled experts at Data Ductus. It is a gigantic technological shift that will permeate throughout LKAB. Our experience from similar assignments puts us in good stead.”

“We are particularly pleased that Tromb has been chosen by LKAB for their architecture, integration, and system development and platform capabilities. With these combined capabilities, we are optimally positioned to achieve the ambitious project goals,” he concludes.

Focusing on sustainable mining

The mine of the future is carbon dioxide-free, digitized and autonomous. It requires new control systems and mining equipment, as well as complex and efficient management systems that can meet the future demands for a sustainable industry. Both Data Ductus and Spin Growth share the same vision as LKAB for a sustainable future built on technology.

“We are honored that LKAB has put their trust in Data Ductus – choosing us as one of their key digitalization partners when they face the biggest change in their 130-year history,” says Stefan Lundström, CEO of Data Ductus. “For some years we have had the privilege of providing IT services and solutions to this innovative mining company, and now we have cemented our collaboration even further. That our partnership also contributes to LKAB’s green transition is completely in line with our vision of enabling a sustainable society through technological innovation.”

“I am incredibly impressed by the efforts that LKAB have gone to in order to develop this vision,” continues AnnaCarin Falkman, IT & IoT Business Unit Manager at Data Ductus. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with LKAB and other suppliers as we work to realize this vision with them.”

AI and Intelligent Automation are central to the solutions

“It’s an exciting digital challenge that lies ahead of us both from a technic and change management perspective. Substorm is founded on the principle that Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Automation are the keys to a sustainable and equal future. Now, together with Tromb, Data Ductus and LKAB, we have the opportunity to put this into practice and prove that it’s possible,” concludes Sofi Elfving, CEO and founder of Substorm.
